Contractual people work for the whole day as if they are full-time employees but have finite employment times that usually last a couple of months. Temporary staff work depending on the demand (some for a few hours to the whole day even) but can be relieved of their duties as quickly as they were hired. Contractual are usually hired through agencies or manning companies who provide people with the proper skills for specified jobs. They also get a cut of your earnings that serves as your payment for their getting you employed. You normally get benefits from such agencies such as Social Security and others but that depends on the people who negotiate on your behalf.
